If you buy a bed, you do not stop there. You also get the pillows, comforter, sheets and throws to make the ensemble complete. Just like a bed, your kids will enjoy their futon more if they have the right materials and accessories. And you will enjoy it more too, because it looks better in the room and is much easier to keep clean.
I just read an article by consumer reports correspondent Janice Liberman. She was doing a story on mattresses for consumers, specifically, how much you need to spend and the difference between high end and low end mattresses. Here is one of the things she said:
But not all innerspring mattresses are the same. You can determine quality by looking at coil count, wire gauge, and the thickness of a mattress. A retailer should have the manufacturer's specifications for each model it sells - don't be afraid to ask. Choosing a Sealy, Serta, Kingsdown mattress, or other top quality mattress, isn't made any easier as each of these manufacturers offers different combinations of coil count, wire gauge and materials.
However, the main danger may be the higher density of PDBEs used to assist in preventing combustion in memory foam mattresses. PDBEs accumulating in the body are just like banned PCBs, and they have been associated with cancer and other ailments. PDBEs have already been banned in Europe but not in North America. Some medical researchers feel, that the extra load of PDBEs in the newly made mattresses can cause millions of cancer cases in the coming decades. As you lie directly on your mattress for 8 hours every night, your body is in complete contact with the dangerous PDBEs while sleeping, as they pass right through your skin.
