Twin mattresses, also known as single beds, measure 39" x 75." These are the variety of mattress that is commonly found on daybeds, trundle beds, hideaways, and even most children's beds. However, if you are looking to fit a sheet over a twin bed in a student dormitory, it will likely be slightly longer measuring at 39" x 80." This lengthened twin mattress (named long twin mattress) is primarily used to occupy taller teens and adults and may prove harder to find the appropriate bedding for - just one more reason to get those scholarships to pay for college tuition.
If you do buy a Stearns and Foster mattress the salesperson will urge you to buy the 'complete mattress set', which means buying the boxspring as well. Personally, I think a mattress that costs as much as an S and F should give perfectly adequate support without needing the help of a boxspring. However, the decision is yours but I can't help feeling boxsprings are superfluous and are sold for one reason only; to make more money for the manufacturer and retailer.
Airbeds (another type of mattress) use air for primary support as opposed to innersprings or foam. The level of firmness of the mattress is adjusted by adding or removing air. Some mattresses offer dual air chambers so that sleeping partners can adjust their comfort levels individually. Air mattresses also vary in complexity, from a simple airbed (also called "air bed") to more intricate models. The more intricately constructed air mattresses contain various layers including a cover and foam pad for comfort: the air chamber for main support, supporting foam for support around the edge of the mattress, and a foundation for additional comfort and support.
Another benefit is that it wont develop cavity after you sleep on it. This feature is great for couples who are sharing one bed. When you sleep on the bed, a mold will immediately be formed. Each sleep partner will form its own mold. In this way, you wont easily move to the other side of the bed.
